Changing lives through compassionate advocacy
Becoming an advocate is the first step to protecting you or your loved ones’ rights. But nobody can do everything on their own. That is why The Arc of the Lakeshore offers services that empower you with knowledge and give the crucial assistance you need when handling life essentials: housing, education, employment, recreation, access to service navigation, legal issues, and more.
Our Advocacy & Outreach Services

Self-advocacy is a critical tool for defending the civil and human rights of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and improving their quality of life. The Consumer Voice Part II Program is designed to help these individuals learn how to speak up for themselves, share opinions, and advocate for their rights. The program encourages participation in activities that foster growth in self-advocacy, ultimately leading to enhanced knowledge, stronger social skills, and greater self-esteem.

That’s why we have resource navigators who provide personalized guidance, ensure your voice is heard, and help alleviate some of the burden.

What We Help With:
- Educational preparedness: special education, resources, and referrals
- Financial Stability: employment, housing, estate planning, and more
- Basic Needs: food, shelter, community services
Who is Eligible?
Service Navigation is available to Muskegon and Ottawa County residents of all ages and backgrounds. There are no income restrictions, and services are provided free of charge.

At The Arc of the Lakeshore, we believe that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) have the right to make their own decisions with the support of trusted family members, friends, and allies. Supported Decision-Making empowers individuals to receive the guidance they need while maintaining their rights and independence. This approach mirrors how all adults make decisions by seeking advice, weighing options, and learning from experiences.
Through Supported Decision-Making, individuals can build the skills needed to navigate choices in daily life, from healthcare and finances to education and employment. We aim to provide families and caregivers with the resources to support self-determination while ensuring safety and well-being.
If Supported Decision-Making is not the right fit for your situation, we also provide information on guardianship and can help you explore the best options for your loved one’s needs.
Guardianship options available through The Arc of the Lakeshore:
- Full (Plenary)
- Temporary (Emergency)
- Financial (Conservatorship)
